Georg Lichtenberg was born in Oberramstadt near Darmstadt Germany in 1742. He received his primary educatiion in Darmstadt and entered Gottingen University in 1763 and studied mathematics and natural science. In 1769 Lichtenberg became assistant professor and in 1775 became professor of the University of Gottingen. He taught mathematics, physics, astronomy and a wide variety of other subjects.

  Lichtenberg's work in the field of electricity held the most promise and attracted many other scientists including Volta (which is where we get the term volt). Georg Lichtenberg put up the first lightning rod in Gottingen. His only true scientific discovery in 1777 was when he discovered discharges of static electricity formed remarkable patterns in bits of dust. The basic principle behind the so-called "Lichtenberg Figures" is used in todays modern photocopy machines, although at the time Lichtenberg could see no practical use for his discovery.

  Today, Lichtenberg Figures are a form of art with fractal-like patterns branching out in all directions that have been permanently captured in blocks of crystal clear acrylic plastic. These patterns are formed when a trapped electrical charge suddenly escapes in a brief, lightning-like discharge. The intense spark discharges leaving behind a tree-like pattern of microscopic fractures which reflect light like microscopic mirrors.
